The photographs in Mark Steinmetz's sprawling new book, Rivers & Towns, were taken in the 1980s in working-class towns and cities in Connecticut, USA. "The haunting factories and mills built along the rivers had experienced their heyday and they were beginning to decline. These places moved me and I wanted to describe the bridges, the houses and the streets, and show something of the inner life of the people. At the same time, I was trying to discover myself as a photographer." -Mark Steinmetz
