First published in 1992 to critical acclaim, Pictures From Home is a gift from Larry Sultan to his parents.
Sultan returned to his home in Southern California periodically in the 1980s. The book sequentially describes that decade through records, combining contemporary photography with stills from home movies, snippets of conversation, Sultan's own writings, and others. regards.
The result is a narrative collage in which the border between documentary and staging becomes increasingly ambiguous. Simultaneously, the distance normally maintained between the photographer and his subjects also slips into an exchange of dialogue and emotion that is unique to this work.
Significantly increasing the page count of the original book, this MACK edition clarifies the multiplicity of voices - both textual and pictorial - to allow a new perspective on this work. Emphasizing the cinematic movement of the family's home videos, the Super-8 stills have been newly digitized and enlarged, with selected scenes running full-page and double-page spreads. Most significantly, the book honors Sultan as the "King of Color Photography."
