Todd Hido's Outskirts is the perfect complement to his acclaimed first title, House Hunting. Hido's large-format color photographs of the suburbs convey an aura of loneliness, mystery, and isolation while simultaneously managing to radiate comfort and even warmth. His portraits of local houses are imbued with an eerie softness, their exteriors shimmer enticingly, or is it eerie? - in the cool night air. An essay by the eminent writer Luc Sante, entitled "Strange", brilliantly echoes Hido's work and is an excellent introduction to the book. Todd Hido received the Eureka Grant in 2001. His photographs are in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and the New Orleans Museum of Art, as well as other public and private collections. .
