First published in 1814, 'Werner's Color Nomenclature' is an extraordinary guide to the colors of the natural world acclaimed by artists and scientists for more than two centuries, including Charles Darwin, who used it to identify colors in nature for his voyage on HMS Beagle.
At the end of the 18th century, the mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner realized the need for a standardized color scheme that would allow science to accurately describe the most subtle color differences. This scheme was later adapted by the floral painter Patrick Syme , who, using the minerals described by Werner, created the color charts in this book, which he completed with examples from the animal and plant kingdoms.
With this splendid facsimile edition , what was an invaluable resource for naturalists and anthropologists around the world is now made available to a new generation of artists.
