A study on photography produced as a political propaganda tool during the Estado Novo in Portugal . .

Through montage and photomontage, printed photography during the Estado Novo in Portugal explored the narrative and connotative possibilities of the image in different media, gaining relevance both in official propaganda and in speeches opposing the regime.

The result of a research project, "Printed Photography and Propaganda in Portugal in the New State" is a reference for historians, researchers, collectors and photographers . The book contains 238 reproductions of 50 historical publications that go from 1928 to the end of the dictatorship in 1974 (books, illustrated magazines and catalogues), organized into four thematic chapters and accompanied by comments that summarize and contextualize each of the referenced publications. The selection proposed by Filomena Serra also includes some publications of 'protest' or that propose an alternative discourse to the official image: the surrealism of Fernando Lemos, the humanism of Palla and Martins or critical views of the authoritarian regime of Salazar. The selection is completed by some publications about Portugal that appeared outside the country itself.

Finalist book for the Historical Book prize of Les Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d'Arles 2022 .
