Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), a polymath of the German Renaissance, was a prolific artist, theorist, and writer whose works explored everything from religion to art theory, including philosophy . His enormous artistic production includes altarpieces, portraits, self-portraits, watercolors and books. However, it is primarily famous for its incredible collection of woodcuts that brought what was considered a craft practice to the status of a new art form.

Dürer's woodcuts amazed both for their dimensions and their detail. With works such as Apocalypse and the Arc de Triomphe for Emperor Maximilian I, he created works of larger size, much more precise technique, and far greater complexity than any previous effort in the field. In dense and meticulous compositions, he expanded the chromatic and dynamic range, providing a new level of conceptual, emotional and spiritual intensity in an evolution that begins with the famous engraving El Caballero, la Muerte y el Diablo and culminates in Melancolía I, a often cited as an early image defining a melancholic or depressive state.

Dürer, naturally curious, adopted ideas from contemporary masters and artists in both Germany and Italy , and his own influence left its mark on generations throughout Europe. In this essential book, we study the complex technique of this pioneering figure, his omnivorous intellect, and the key works that shaped his enduring legacy.
