In this book, Sam Contis presents a new window on the work of iconic American photographer Dorothea Lange. From Lange's extensive archive, Contis builds a fragmented and unknown world centered on the figure of the daytime sleeper, a symbol of both respite and oblivion. The book shows us one artist through the eyes of another, with Contis responding to the resonances between her and Lange's way of seeing. It reveals a largely unknown side of Lange and includes never-before-seen photographs of her family, portraits from her studio, and images taken on the streets of San Francisco and the East Bay.
