"Ánxel Huete. A critical review" It was the first presentation that a museum made of the career of Ánxel Huete (Ourense, 1944), an essential artist for understanding the course of artistic production in Galicia in recent decades. A defender of art as an engine of social transformation , he combined plastic work with political militancy and active participation in the organization of fundamental events for the renewal of Galician art and its modes of organization.

The discussions on art and ideology and the reflection that the artist makes on the need to abandon the concept that includes painting as a referential and mimetic instrument between external reality and pictorial production —as a resource of representation— are a fundamental part of his thought. The exhibition proposed a journey through the moments and places that characterized five decades of artistic production , in which his work walked towards a progressive synthesis of the pictorial image, both in the monochromatic pieces, in the reticular distributions or in the firm decision of the author to reduce the analysis of painting to the symbolic status of the sign.

Dialectic always accompanies his work, where the dialogue takes place within the breadth of abstraction: the elements of iconic origin slide towards the symbol to disappear by concealment, and despite being erased, the forms are still visible. Considering abstraction as an operational resource will lead Huete to conceive of art as a codification and to understand it as a system of signs resulting from conventions that must be learned in their specificity.
