Fukase took his first pictures of Sasuke in 1977. He had taken a little calico kitten and named him Sasuke, but this kitten disappeared after only ten days. Fukase posted missing cat posters all over his neighborhood. Strictly speaking, there were two Sasukes. The cat that appears in his photographs is almost always second. For the next several weeks, Fukase took Sasuke with him wherever he went and photographed him every day. His zeal paid off. The following year he published a collection of photographs of Sasuke, titled ¡Viva! Sasuke.
