Through his distinctive decorative style, the Czech artist and art nouveau master Alfons Mucha (1860-1939) defined the aesthetics of the end of the century. His suggestive compositions of ornamental motifs, flowers and beautiful women in evocative shades of peach, gold, ocher and olive became paradigms of the Belle Époque years.

Mucha's work left its mark on the illustrations, posters, postcards, and advertisements of his day. His striking posters of actress Sarah Bernhardt became especially famous. Along with his delicate decorative work, Mucha also held strong political convictions. Through his monumental Slavic Epic cycle, he expressed his unconditional support for Pan-Slavism, which advocated the political independence of the Czech and Slavic nations from the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

This book, made in collaboration with the Mucha Foundation, illustrates the main works and presents all of Mucha's artistic facets, from decorative motifs to book illustrations, through posters, photographs and monumental paintings.
