The television program " Ways of seeing ", directed in 1972 by a very young John Berger, set out to analyze how our ways of seeing affect the way of interpreting .
The series received various awards, revolutionized art theory and was adapted into this book, becoming an indispensable title in art theory and visual communication ever since. In these pages, Berger analyzes four aspects of the interpretation of oil painting : its origin related to the sense of property, the continued use of women as a pictorial object, the relationship between the visual heritage of painting and advertising, and , finally, the transformation of the meaning of the original work within the framework of its multiple reproductions.
In this new edition, carefully revised, the original design by Richard Hollis has been recovered.
