Maruja Mallo (1902-1995) has been one of the most original and important women in the history of Spanish art . A friend of such prominent figures as Salvador Dalí, Federico García Lorca, Pablo Neruda and Ramón Gómez de la Serna, she was the only woman in the Vallecas group and her romantic relationship with Rafael Alberti was of crucial importance to both of them, as well as her friendship with Miguel Hernandez.

Energetic, brilliant, free, transgressive and with a fearsome sense of humor, she amazed and scandalized the society of her time , with the quality of her work, impregnated with surrealism and a darkness that seemed to presage future disasters.

The civil war, which shattered so many dreams, drove her into exile; in America he will be reborn with large canvases in which geometry and nature come together in mysterious harmony . Her return to Spain in 1965 marks a bittersweet stage where the character, halfway between the present and the past, was about to devour the artist. An artist who, always tight-lipped about her personal life, used to declare: " My biography is in my painting ."
