“After the publication of my latest book on social life in the United States, Songbook, and a retrospective of my four large-scale American projects, Gathered Leaves, I went through a long period of rethinking my creative process . For more than a year I stopped traveling and photographing people. I hardly took photos. When I returned to photography, I wanted to reduce the medium to its primary elements. Rather than trying to make some kind of epic narrative about America, I wanted to just spend time looking at other people and hopefully briefly glimpse their inner life. To try to access these lives, I took all the photographs indoors. While these rooms often exist in remote locations, it is just to emphasize that these images are not referring to any particular location. Whether an image was made in Odessa or Minneapolis, my goal was the same: just to spend time in the presence of another beating heart. "- Alec Soth
