Photographs have a strange and powerful way of shaping the way we see the world . The most successful images have been incorporated into our collective consciousness, defining eras, making history or simply capturing such a human and universal detail that they have become planetary icons. To study this unique influence, Photo Icons looks at the most important milestones in the history of photography.

From the earliest images, such as Nicéphore Niépce 's 1827 rooftop eight-hour exposure photograph or Louis Daguerre 's famous 1838 street scene, to the work of Martin Parr , this volume is a history of the discipline and , in turn, an analysis of the social, historical and artistic impact of each particular work.

Included are the experimental surrealist snapshots of the 1920s and the crude photorealism of the 1930s, including Dorothea Lange 's Migrant Mother. We behold powerful figures like Che Guevara and heartbreakers like Marilyn Monroe, as well as a wide spectrum of human emotions and experiences to which photography is vivid testimony: from the euphoric image of The Kiss at the Hôtel de Ville, Robert Doisneau (1950), to Nick Ut 's Napalm Against Civilians horror, showing a nine-year-old girl, Phan Thi Kim Phúc, running naked toward the camera as she flees a napalm bombardment.
