During the second half of the 19th century, in the green fields around Aix-en-Provence, Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) devoted himself to the representation of landscapes and still lifes that would later become key works of modern art . With compact, intense brushstrokes and a bold approach to space and light, Cézanne mediated between Impressionism and the seminal movements of the early 20th century and became, in the words of Matisse and Picasso, "the father of us all."

This new approach to his work selects the key works that allow us to understand the development, innovations and crucial influence that Cézanne has had on modern art . From compositions of fruit and pears to scenes of bathers, we go through his experimentation with color, perspective and texture to evoke "a harmony parallel to nature", as well as the very process of seeing and representing.

Along the way, we stop at his famous series of paintings The Card Players, with their combination of layers of warm and cool colors to build form and surface, and the geometric rigor of his landscapes around Aix-en-Provence , as brilliant in their capture of the light of the South of France as they are daring in their radical conception of dimension and depth.
