€0.99 is a fieldwork of more than two years photographing in street markets and in their socialization spaces . Jaume Parera is fascinated by the culture of effort, innate in paradistas or stallholders, who generation after generation struggle to dignify their trade. It is, therefore, a tribute to his perseverance and dedication, and to the passion for his work. The Barcelona photographer is interested in connecting with these people and with their closest living environment, through sincere and honest photography : looks at what we find before and after a frenetic commercial activity.
As Rafa Badia writes very well in the book's prologue, "Past, present and future meet face to face every morning in the town or city where the market is held" . From there comes a personal visual testimony about this great social microcosm, and Jaume's interest in showing the beauty of a visually chaotic and ephemeral place. The flea market is a modular spectacle that, for the vast majority of its customers, is rough and perhaps ugly, but also necessary to keep their community alive.
Through the €0.99 images, the photographer shows the complicity and commitment of this clientele who are looking for, as Badia himself points out, " the best price for the best of all worlds."
Nacho Rivera , photographer and teacher, adds: "Jaume Parera, with his €0.99 photobook, brings us closer to the life of street markets from an empathetic, creative and colorful perspective. €0.99 is a necessary job, since that in these spaces sadly threatened by new trends in fast consumption, such important values as daily effort, companionship, and humility are preserved. The €0.99 photobook is invaluable."
